How old is a buck with six points

For this goal, deer harvest should be comprised primarily of does and mature bucks. To increase buck size, hunters must either harvest so few bucks that they do not affect age structure of the buck population, or hunters or hunting guides must learn to differentiate between young bucks and mature bucks.

At a distance, buck maturity can be crudely estimated by observing antler mass and body mass. Trophy buck management is relatively ineffcient on most properties without a high fence because most bucks are exposed to harvest elsewhere. However, if larger bucks are a goal on any property, shooting young bucks just compounds the problem. An option to manage buck harvest on some properties is to limit each hunter to only one buck per year and require each hunter to pay a taxidermist to shoulder mount any buck harvested.

There are three basic components to managing deer herds. They are genetics, nutrition, and age. In order to manage for older age deer herds, a manager must manipulate the herd to produce some young deer, some middle age deer, and some older age deer. Having a nutritionally healthy deer herd at or below the carrying capacity of the land usually means a highly productive deer herd.

This means that excess deer need to be removed yearly in order to maintain the herd at carrying capacity and in good nutritional health. If these fawns are reared to one and one half years of age then surplus deer with the least genetic potential spikes or four points should be removed leaving the remainder to reach 5 or 6 years of age.

Remember - just because a deer is five or six does not mean it will necessarily have big antlers. The trick is to remove deer with little antler potential and save those with the best potential.

However, they also may have a pot belly and a sagging back. Their increased body mass gives them a more rounded appearance, and they may look like a small cow. They will have achieved 90 to percent of their antler growth potential, and they can have highly stained tarsal glands during the rut with the stain extending well below the tarsal gland.

A few free-ranging bucks make it to the post-mature age category. These bucks have passed their prime and regress in both body and antler size. Large antlers on a younger deer and small antlers on an older deer can negatively influence your estimated age.
